The latest Shadow and Kaydee courtship behavior revealed a noticeable change at the Big Bear nest: Shadow appeared to let Kaydee a little closer. On September 1, Kaydee arrived at the nest first and waited. Then Shadow flew in. What followed may have been their most openly playful nest visit yet.
There were tail nibbles. Neck-feather nibbles. Beak bumps. Stick rearranging. A duet from the nest. And, naturally, a disagreement over exactly where one very important branch belonged.

But beneath the humor was something more meaningful. Only days earlier, Shadow had sometimes appeared less receptive to Kaydee’s advances. This time, he stayed beside her, interacted with her and worked around the nest with her before the two eventually settled near one another for another night in the Roost Tree. It does not prove that Shadow and Kaydee have formed a pair bond. But it certainly looked like another step forward.

Shadow and Kaydee’s Courtship Behavior Turns Playful at the Nest
Kaydee was already waiting when Shadow arrived at the nest Tuesday evening.
Almost immediately, the energy changed.
Kaydee went back to work on the sticks while Shadow remained close. Then came an interaction that Big Bear watchers have not seen much between these two. Shadow nibbled at Kaydee’s tail feathers. Kaydee later gently nibbled Shadow’s neck feathers.
The two bumped and touched beaks as they moved around one another, sometimes working and sometimes appearing to test each other’s boundaries. Those small interactions are worth noting.
Bald eagle courtship does not always involve dramatic aerial displays. Some signs of courtship and pair bonding can be remarkably subtle. Eagles may perch together, rearrange nesting material together and vocalize back and forth. And Tuesday evening, Shadow and Kaydee were doing several of those things in the same place. The nest.
Their Duet May Have Been the Sweetest Moment
Then Shadow began to chortle. Kaydee joined him.
For a few moments, two eagle voices once again rose together from the Big Bear nest.
We cannot translate what they were saying to one another, tempting as that may be. Bald eagles use vocalizations for communication, and pairs can vocalize back and forth during courtship and bonding behavior.
What made this duet especially noticeable was everything happening around it. Shadow and Kaydee were not calling from distant trees. They were standing together inside the nest, interacting physically and working around the sticks. That combination made the evening feel different.
For people who have watched Shadow since Jackie died, it was also impossible to separate the moment from everything that came before it. Hearing two eagle voices from that nest again can feel hopeful and heartbreaking at the same time. Both feelings belong there.
Kaydee Gets to Work, but the Branch Manager Is Watching
Of course, no Big Bear nest visit would be complete without sticks becoming serious business. Kaydee has already demonstrated that she has opinions about nest construction. Strong opinions. Tuesday was no exception. She pulled, pushed and repositioned sticks while Shadow watched. Eventually, he joined the work himself.
And that matters because nest work can be part of bald eagle courtship and pair bonding. Both sexes participate in building and maintaining a nest, and pairs may repeatedly rearrange materials as nesting season approaches.
But apparently there are limits to creative freedom when Shadow is involved. After Kaydee finally left the nest and headed toward the Roost Tree, Shadow remained behind. He surveyed the nest. Then he found one of the sticks Kaydee had moved.
Shadow picked it up and placed it right back along the right side of the nest, almost exactly where it had been before Kaydee moved it. The Branch Manager had completed his final inspection. Kaydee may have arrived with renovation plans, but Shadow still seems unwilling to surrender control of every piece of furniture.
The Stick Battle Was Funny, but It May Also Matter
It would be easy to dismiss all that stick shuffling as nothing more than classic Shadow behavior. Yet nest building has a larger role in bald eagle relationships.
Courtship and nest building are closely connected parts of the bald eagle breeding cycle. Bald eagle pairs work together on nests as they establish or reinforce their bonds.
That makes Kaydee’s growing interest in Shadow and the Big Bear nest especially interesting. What began as repeated visits has gradually developed into more time together, more shared activity around the nest and increasingly comfortable interactions between the two.
The pattern is becoming harder to ignore. Still, there is an important distinction: promising behavior is not the same thing as a confirmed pair bond.
Shadow and Kaydee Are Still Early in This Process
September is early. Nesting behavior at the Big Bear nest generally begins gradually in October or November before increasing in December. That makes what happened September 1 particularly intriguing.
These interactions are appearing before the heart of the traditional Big Bear nesting period. If Kaydee remains in the area, the coming months could reveal much more.
Repeated nest work will be important to watch. So will new stick deliveries, continued roosting and perching together, mutual vocalizations and how the two respond as territorial and breeding behavior becomes stronger later in the year.
For now, there is no reason to race ahead of them. Shadow and Kaydee appear to be figuring this out one interaction at a time. And perhaps one disputed stick at a time.
This Does Not Mean Leaving Jackie Behind
This is the hardest part. Jackie will always be part of the Big Bear nest and Shadow’s story. Kaydee cannot replace that history, and she does not need to. Whatever is developing between Shadow and Kaydee will be its own relationship, with its own personalities and rhythms.
Viewers can still miss Jackie deeply and also feel happy for Shadow as he begins to welcome Kaydee a little closer. One story does not have to erase the other. Jackie can remain loved and remembered while people smile at these new moments unfolding for Shadow.
Then Shadow Followed Kaydee to the Roost Tree
After Kaydee left the nest, she headed toward the Roost Tree. Shadow stayed behind just long enough to restore that all-important stick to its proper location. Then he left too.
He joined Kaydee at the Roost Tree for the night. It was a fitting ending to an evening filled with little changes. Weeks ago, the question was whether Kaydee would remain around Big Bear at all. Then she began appearing near Shadow. She followed him between familiar perches and visited his nest. She started moving his sticks.
Now Shadow and Kaydee are touching beaks, nibbling feathers, vocalizing together, working around the nest and continuing to roost near one another.
Something is changing at Big Bear. It is still too early to say exactly what that something will become. But on September 1, Shadow and Kaydee’s courtship behavior took another unmistakable step forward.
Shadow may still insist on having the final word when it comes to his sticks. Kaydee, however, keeps coming back. And for a community that has carried so much sadness since losing Jackie, watching two eagles standing together in that familiar nest offered something that has been difficult to feel lately. A little hope.
